REVIEW: Recently my six year old daughter has been telling me things she has never told me before. Things that alarmed me and made me realize she is growing up. She says things like “Nobody likes me” and “I’m not as good as all the other kids.” It seems like such a crazy world to think about just two years ago, she wouldn’t have even been thinking about things like this. And yet, in first grade, kids start to have a sense of self awareness and social situations that make them question and think about who they are and what others think of them.
I was THRILLED to read to her Howard Wigglebottom Listens To His Heart, by Howard Binkow. This is a story about a bunny rabbit who loved to dance until one day his friends laughed at his dancing. He tries to gain approval from his peers by doing other activities like basketball and running. It turns out he is not good at the other activities and still doesn’t get noticed in a positive light. His Grandfather tells him that he is good at dancing and even teaches him some moves! Howard decides to ‘listen to his heart’ and dances once again in front of friends showing all his ‘moves’. This time they cheer!
I love this book and so did my daughter. It teaches children to listen to their heart by doing what they love to do. With some effort and determination you might even win over the approval and acceptance of their peers, something that is on these little ones minds apparently.
